When you are required by law to have an SR-22 insurance statement in place, that means you have, for some reason, caused the Department of Motor Vehicles to feel you are a high-risk driver. There are many reasons this can occur, but most commonly it is due to having a high number of accidents, numerous moving violations or driving under the influence. While you may be required to maintain this type and amount of coverage for some time, there are very good reasons to show you are a responsible driver going forward.
Consider, for example, what happens after your SR-22 insurance requirement is no longer in place. While this requirement may have caused your car insurance rates to go up now, you will still have high rates down the road even after you are able to get rid of an SR-22 statement. There are several simple things that you can do to reduce these risks going forward.
- Don’t drive while intoxicated. If you feel you are unable to stop yourself, put an ignition device in place that prevents you from operating your vehicle while you have a high blood alcohol level.
- Don’t make any claims against your auto insurance policy. The more claims you make (especially if you make them frequently), the more of a high risk driver you are.
- Don’t get any moving violations. This step requires making the decision to drive slower and to minimize instances of aggressive driving.
- Take a defensive driving or driver’s education course. Even online courses can provide solid information and show your auto insurance provider you are responsible.
- Ask your insurer what else you can do to improve your status with the company. Generally, you’ll want to abide by the terms of your agreement with the DMV.
The requirement to have an SR-22 insurance statement can feel limiting, but most of the time these do not last long. Once you are no longer required to have one, it helps to have a proven track record that your insurance company can see that shows you are now a safe, trustworthy driver. Take the time to talk to your agent now about what else you can do to improve your record.
